Heroin
Janis Joplin was born on January 19, 1943 in Port Arthur , Texas. She was born into a family that was very religious and went to catholic church frequently. She had two younger siblings. When she was younger she was in a group of outcasts who listened to blues music. She was influenced by these songs and artist. Some singers she liked listening too was Bessie Smith and Lead Belly. Around the age of 20 Joplin decided she would move to San Francisco because she wanted to get away from Texas. She did this because “‘[her] head was in a much different place’”.

Heroin can be taken as a shot, smoked, or even injected. It usually occurs as a white or black powdery substance.
“4.2 million Americans age 12 or older had used heroin at least once in their lives.” Most people who use heroin become dependent on it. This makes many people become addicted to this terrible drug. While on this drug your blood pressure will be affected dramatically.
When using this drug you may get temporary dry mouth, slowed breathing, vomiting, nausea, or body temperature lower than normal. Even if you only do this deadly drug once you can go in a coma or even die. Corey Monteith (actor) died at the age of 31 due to heroin. Sid Vicious (bassists) died in 1979 also because of heroin. Dee Dee Ramone (songwriter/bassists) died due to an overdose of heroin.
Two other major major musical stars of the 1960’s rock generation, also tragically lost their young lives to drugs at the peak of their popularity and success. Jimi Hendrix who was considered to be one of the greatest guitarist of his time overdosed on sleeping pills in 1970. This was at the young age of 27. Jim Morrison, who was a very popular lead singer for the band The Doors died of a heroin overdose in 1971. He too was only 27 years old when he died. Ironically, Janis Joplin was also only 27 when she was found dead, overdosed on heroin. This was only 16 days after Jimi Hendrix lost his life.
Janis Joplin was a very inspirational rock and blues singer songwriter.Imagine how successful she would have been if she didn’t make the mistakes she did. When most people take drugs they know what they are risking. However, some people think that they will be able to avoid the consequences. But, when you hear about stories like Janis Joplin or Jim Morrison you realize bad things can happen to anyone no matter how talented or famous you
