Morals vs. Society and Self
In 2016, female writers are not rare. Actually, women authors are very common. As women have gained respect in literature, pseudonyms are no longer needed, to disguise the gender of the author. If Charlotte Bronte published her classic novel Jane Eyre in 2016 oppose to 1847 she would not have had to use the pseudonym Currer Bell. Under the alias, the novel received great reviews since the audience did not know that a woman wrote such a book. Once this was discovered reviews turned more negative. One must practice their values.When doing so, they will often have to make decisions. For example, Jane must make the choice to leave Mr.Rochester even though she is still in love with him. Jane can not bear sacrificing her own values to become Mr. Rochester’s mistress, since he is already married.“ ‘I care for myself. The more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself. I will keep the law given by God; sanctioned by man. I will hold to the principles received by me when I was sane and not mad- as I am now’ “ (Bronte 202). Feelings such as love cloud judgement and leads one to disregard their former values. To maintain one’s values making a hard choice is crucial. Jane leaves Mr. Rochester so she can continue to respect herself, she stand up for her morals. After, leaving Mr.Rochester Jane ends up living with St.John and his two sisters. St. John offers her marriage so she can go to India with him. “ ‘ He has told me I am formed for labour- not for love: which is true, no doubt. But, in my opinion, I am not formed for love, it follows that I am not formed for marriage. Would it not be strange, Die, to be chained for life to a man who regarded one but as a useful tool? ‘ “ (Bronte 266).
