Located near the Mesopotamian region in southern Europe, the country houses the city of Rome, which was once considered the greatest and most powerful city in the world. Military conflict in the region cannot simply be split into historic and modern, but must be considered in terms of the Axis of Evil and its current involvement as the Italian Republic within the United Nations, as the country’s military history spans from the Thirty Year’s War through World War II (Paoletti 25). This reinforces the thesis that Italy’s determination to be welcoming to foreigners is not just a form of obsequiousness but a direct response to a past in which Italy was on the wrong side of history. The single most impactful element on Italy’s culture is likely its geographic locale and its propensity towards accepting foreigners.
