Managing fasting time, fluid balance and ensuring patients do not become dehydrated or malnourished are the key aspects to consider. To achieve these, most importantly, using quality and service improvement tools to analyse (ICO, 2011), patient-centred approach should be performed. A thorough holistic assessment of patient needs should reflect in his care pathway. Despite best-practice guidelines, preoperative fasting times remain excessive (Roberts, 2013). Therefore, from the first moment of patient admission, a fasting plan of care and associated assessments should be implemented, documented and updated.
