In an article written by Sean Williams for the Motley Fool entitled the 5 biggest obstacles facing medical marijuana he goes on to state that one of the biggest obstacles is that there are unknown long term effects of use. He goes on to clarify this statement highlighting that what marijuana advocates need are long term studies that show that there are noted benefits and minimal risks. There are a number of studies that have been recently published hinting that marijuana could have healing properties that could possibly treat Alzheimer’s, type 2 diabetes and perhaps even brain cancer. President Obama’s is quoted as saying that it’s simply not a priority. The federal government is dealing with things at the moment that are of much greater priority. They are working on keeping the economy on the right track as well as agreeing on the 2016 fiscal budget and several other more pressing issues. Unfortunately, this will keep the medical marijuana debate on the backburner. In fact, in order to have a chance of seeing the federal ban lifted we will need economic and international stability. There is no set amount of time when this could happen, it could take years before medical marijuana moves further up the list of priorities for congress and the president (Williams, 2015). In considering the opposition it is also beneficial to ruminate over the reasons why legalizing cannabis could possible helpful. One of the strongest reasoning’s for legalizing medicinal cannabis is the effect that it could have on people who need it as a form of treatment for medical needs where other drugs have failed.
