Because the founding fathers refrained from freeing the slaves, when they had the chance right from the start, the country faced over 200 years of devastating racial tension. It was not until the late 1800’s that slavery was outlawed by the ratification of 13th Amendment (Klein, C. ), and not until the mid 1900’s that black and white individuals could co-exist. It was a long fought battle but the country overcame the racial difficulties and became a more diverse and inclusive nation. On April 5th, 2017 Dove posted a new advertisement titled #RealMoms. The advertisement is a dedication to real moms everywhere. It is a beautiful representation of mothers from all different ethnicities; however, Dove decided they would incorporate a transgender mother into their ad. The man, who identifies as a woman and considers himself a mother, states that he and his wife are raising their child together and are both the biological parents. He claims that when people ask what he means, he laughs it off and says “ Yep, we’re both gonna be moms.”(Dove) It is hard to believe that a company whose sole purpose is to keep people clean, decided to take a political stance. Especially, on an issue that is still not widely accepted. Did they not realize that posting an advertisement dedicated to real mothers but including a transgender mother would cause backlash? This is a perfect example of how the media uses their power to try to include all people. I believe that a line must be drawn and the concept of inclusion should not be such a pressing issue at this time. The country is facing more important foreign and domestic issues that must be tackled before we continue fighting for inclusion. African-Americans had to become equal to whites, there is no argument against that. Women had to become equal to men, there is no argument against that.
