“The Hunt,” as well as “Off the Hunt,” was originally painted sometime before the year 1904, by Polish impressionist artist Julian Falat. Falat was known greatly for his landscape paintings. Falat was extremely popular in his home country of Poland. Several of his paintings would grow to be quite valuable; some selling upwards of $60,000. Falat was an extremely educated man and that shone through tremendously in his paintings. He loved to travel, and he believed greatly in taking pride in one’s country and conveying beliefs and values through art. Everybody is proud of their heritage, and heritage, much of the time, is strongly conveyed through art. With the looting that was done through the Nazis during World War II, much of that heritage was lost, along with a great sense of pride. My favorite quote that I came across in studying about repatriation is from the speech given during the repatriation ceremony of Julian Falat’s paintings. "No one can ever provide just compensation to the victims of the Nazis ' atrocities, but it is very gratifying for our office to play a role in returning the art that they looted during World War II to its rightful owners," New York U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara gave this statement.
