Health Education and Promotion Settings Health education/promotion is done by professionally trained health education specialist. Health education and promotion has become a need in society as people become more knowledgeable about health and as we see an incline in health care. Health education and promotion can be found in various settings. Health education and promotion are found in settings such as; schools, public or community, and worksite settings. In the school setting it primarily involves school-aged children health or health relative behaviors. There are two ways to get involved or work in the public and community health setting such as working for a voluntary health agency and public health agencies. Some of the task performed by health education specialist in the community and public settings include; evaluating program events, fund-raising, committee work, budgeting, grant writing, public speaking and advocacy. Voluntary health agencies are created by concerned citizens to handle their community needs that are not met by the government. Voluntary health agencies typically rely on volunteers and donations. Health professionals in this setting plan, implement and evaluate the components of the agency’s program. Some examples of voluntary agencies are the American Heart Association and American Lung Association. Public Health agencies are run by the government and is funded by American tax dollars. Health departments are of the city, county, state, or federal government. Public health agency employers are paid by funded grants. The purpose of worksite health education/promotion is to focus on prevention and fitness. Some activities that may be promoted in the worksite setting are stress management, weight loss, flu shots, safety, exercise and physical fitness. These few actions could save time that could normally be used on going to the gym, seeing a nutritionist or counselor, and visiting the doctor for an annual flu shot. This benefits companies by having their employees perform some personal task that otherwise would have to done outside of work on site. This also benefits the employees, because of the amount of time it takes to do some these task, the employee does not have to take a full day of work to perform a task. This was they can take on more hours and miss less work thus benefitting the employee and employer. An advantage of working in the worksite health education/promotion setting is access to individuals who may not be available in community programs. It also allows specialist to work with a diverse group of people from upper management to shift workers. The salary for a worksite employee is usually higher than in other settings of health education/promotion. Another advantage is having access to work out equipment thus, not having to pay for a gym membership.
