When Jesus was about to leave earth, He comforted His followers by telling them that He was going to leave them with a comforter, which is the Holy Spirit (John 14:18-27). Prior to the act of handing their life over to Christ the Holy Spirt will already be working to draw the person to their knee in repentance and recognition of their need. No man can come to the Father unless they are drawn by the Holy Spirit (John 6:44). Until the Holy Spirit opens their eyes to their need, they will remain blinded by their sin. The Holy Spirit plays multiple rolls in the believer’s life, God states that He dwells inside of the believer (1Corinthians 6:19), has sealed the eternal security of the believer (Ephesians 1:13) and fills the believer completely (Ephesians 5:18). However, he was not incapable of sinning like God is, because the first man, Adam, was a reflection and not a duplicate of God. When Adam and Eve chose in Genesis 3 to sin against God by eating of the Tree of Good and Evil that God commanded them not to eat from, they brought the punishment on themselves. This punishment resulted in them being removed from the Garden of Eden and their sin spread to all men. “Just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so sin spread through all men” (Romans 5:12). The fall of man will play an important role in helping a person to understand why they have sin in their life in the first place. Once there is an understanding that there is a need for Christ, that is when they will be able to have a response to the Gospel that Christ made a way for them to know Him personally and to escape the punishment of death for their
