Confucius (/kənˈfjuːʃəs/; 551–479 BC)[1] was a Chinese teacher, editor, politician, and philosopher of the Spring and Autumn period of Chinese history.
The philosophy of Confucius emphasizes personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice and sincerity. He championed strong family loyalty, ancestor worship, respect of elders. He also recommended family as a basis for ideal government.
Power distance: there are three cardinal guides in Confucianism: ruler guides subjects, father guides son and husband guides wife. This strict hierarchy among the human relationship helps to maintain the order and harmony of the society in ancient China because people know what they should do stick to their own rank. There is one saying in Analects: “When doing something together as a threesome, there must be one who will have something to teach me. I pick out people's good and follow it. When I see their bad points, I correct them in myself.” ( 三人行,必有我师焉,择其善者而从之,其不善者则改之。) This saying tells us that everyone has his own strengths and weakness, we should always learn from the good thing and learn to correct the bad one in ourselves. And if someone seems to be not outstanding and excellent, we should not look down on him, there may be some bright virtues of him which we have not realize yet. When people are in group, they can always learn from each other and have stronger power to solve problems. There is also one saying,” Do not do to others what you don’t want others do to you.”(己所不欲勿施于人)This saying can be considered to be a golden rule when Chinese people get along with other people. We should always put ourselves in other people’s shoes and think of other people’s feelings. This thinking helps strengthening the collective culture.Moreover, filial piety and is one of the core values of Confucianism, which emphasizes the importance of respecting one’s parents, elders and ancestors.
