They have “FOMO” - the fear of missing out. In the movie, Fight Club, directed by David Fincher, the protagonist, or the narrator who is unnamed, is an everyman who struggles to be apart from the world rather than trying to fit in and live in a world seized by materials and superficiality. Fincher is saying that no one can hide from this technological material take over sickening civilians into non-evolving zombies. I agree with the film’s message and argue that technology is more of a curse than a blessing that is detrimental to our mental, emotional, and physical health, turning mankind into technological slaves.
There are advertisements everywhere, especially on the Internet or on the streets of any city plastering posters, banners or billboards of major companies to display how one should look or what one should do. These digital devices are coming up with updates or apps, making lives more convenient and faster, making individuals want to consume more and more. Although these devices have changed everything in modern society, it has rewired everyone's thoughts and even actions. No GPS can guide one throughout life; technology is the problem and many people fall into these pitfall traps, and end up confused in life. Throughout the recent generations of adults and children, they being are brainwashed by the gushing amount of advertisements and propaganda every day. Tyler Durden explains this well in Fight Club, "Advertisement has us chasing cars and clothes, getting jobs we don't want, to buy shit we don't need. We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars, but we won’t. We’re slowly learning that fact. And we’re very, very pissed off." Children are being raised into thinking that they can be popular or liked by others by having better branded materials than others. Individuals are exposed to lies controlled by the media. The world sets up certain standards or expectations to follow, telling humans what to do and who to be.
