The Truth about Human Nature In the novel Lord of The Flies by William Golding a group of boys were trapped on an island with no adult to help them. There was none on the island. They had to survive on their own. But in that process they take some very dangerous steps which prevents them from survival. William Golding illustrates that the boys are afraid of each other and they make up stories about the beast and that clearly matches to the philosophy of Hobbes. All people have a little bit evilness and dishonesty in their personalities. Thomas Hobbes once said, “The source of every crime, is some defect of the understanding; or some error in reasoning; or some sudden force of the passions." (Hobbes Leviathan) and also in the novel Golding said, “You said you wanted a small fire and you been and built a pile like a hayrick. If I say something.” (Golding 43). Both the quotes are almost saying the same thing and they are saying that misunderstanding will born if people are very different from each other because they will not have the same ideas they will fight to prove that their point is right and the other person’s is wrong. Words and phrases such as “If I say something” (Golding 43), and “some defect of understanding; or some error in reasoning” (Hobbes Leviathan) sets the tone of the author to be direct and the reader would feel surprised because the quote illustrates that people are very different and we wouldn’t know that because people cannot read other people’s mind. The quotes above show that only some people’s opinion are the same but others are different and when they are different there would be a lot of circumstances and that’s what happened to the boys on the
