Electronic medical records are designed to provide nationwide access of organized collections involving patient health information. These records are proposed to keep track of a patient’s entire health and medical history in a computerized, electronic format. It may include a series of data, including demographics, medical history, medication and allergies, immunization status, laboratory test results, radiology images, vital signs, personal statistics, and billing information. This allows for the patients’ medical history to be viewed in one single file without having to track down all of the previous medical records. It helps ensure all the data is accurate, appropriate and legible. It reduces the chances of replicating files or patient medical information and keeps it up to date (“Electronic Health Records,” n.d.). Electronic medical records are still a developmental process across the health care field. There are many components included in the electronic medical records development. Examples such as healthcare agencies using computerized provider order entry (CPOE) or medication administration systems. When becoming involved with patients’ electronic health records, we should always make sure we keep in mind of the ethical principles such as autonomy, justice, beneficence or non-maleficence, and privacy and confidentiality (Mercuri, 2010). I believe that electronic medical records and electronic health records have already started playing a crucial role in my future as a nurse. I believe that the electronic records are more reliable and easier to access then the old paper records. Having a system provide the records on one database only makes my job easier when educating myself about the patients I will be taking care
