How would you define Cognitive Dissonance and when have you experienced it in your own life?
According to chapter 23 of the “Public Speaking Handbook”, cognitive dissonance is when you are presented with information inconsistent with your current attitudes, beliefs, values, or behavior, you become aware that you have a problem; you experience a kind of discomfort (Pg. 221). In another way to explain it, cognitive dissonance means that you are experiencing a way of thinking that is inconsistent and uncomfortable (Pg. 221).
I have experienced this many times in my life. But the place where I experienced this the most is in my house or within my own family. My parents have different religion, and I too grew up being expose with these two different religion. My dad wants me to be a Christians Protestant like him but I choose to be a Seventh Day Adventist and get baptized as a SDA like my mom. When I got baptized my dad hated me and didn’t talk to me for half a year because he wants me to be to follow him since he believe Protestant is the right religion. It is really uncomfortable when cognitive dissonance happens, when what one person think is right might not be right for the others and create a disharmony and disagreement with one another.
