Foreign Aid is money or resources that a given country voluntarily transfers to another country. This can be in the form of a loan, grant or gifts. The Aid serves as assistance to developing economies from developed ones to boost growth, improve democracy and/or strengthen military ally amongst other courses.
Over the years, Africa and other developing countries have received millions of dollars to improve their economies. However, several researchers have argued that the AID has not been put to effective use as several leaders have become more and increasingly corrupt. While others have also argued that AID has rather helped individuals move out of their improvised lives. The interaction between MSU students and Ashesi students further raised concerns on the topic of the relevance of AID in this era.
The team for the motion from Ashesi University Economic Development class strongly opened the floor with a quote, “Ghana needs more trade, not foreign aid...” with an argument that aid truly corrupts the economy. Humanitarian Aid, they argued, is one of the most purposeful Aid as millions of Africans are on life-saving medications today that are paid for by Aid. They help take care of orphans, refugees, AIDs patients and the like in developing worlds. Moreover, this Aid is also used to fund for mosquito nets to protect several families from malaria and also help put millions of children in school. According to the MSU representative, “more than 50 universities have been built with the use of foreign AID.” This Aid is put in investments in technology and science courses in schools. Hence it is really important to note, that even though AID might corrupt, it is not entirely bad especially when it is humanitarian rather than money
