The space he opened was named the Little Galleries of the Photo Secession, but became more commonly known as 291. Being the first gallery of its kind, Stieglitz placed paintings and photographs on the same level. After the opening of his gallery, Stieglitz and other Photo-Secessionists sponsored an international exhibit in the Albright Art Gallery. More than five hundred photographs occupied over half of the gallery space. By this time in history the photograph has finally reached its art status.
Photography was not used only for art purposes. It was used in wars to take aerial photos of the surrounding grounds. It was used as propaganda to boost moral or to “clearly show” who the enemy was in times of war. It was used to show what war was like.
