Herbert Clark Hoover was born on August 10th, 1874 in the small town of West Branch, Iowa. He was one of three children growing up. What he didnt know was that in only a few short monthes, the worst stock market crash in American history would come in effect. Six monthes after coming into office it hit, the great depression. Banks and businesses collapsed, while unemployement rose from nearly 3 percent to a shocking 23 percent (History.com Staff). This hit hard in America. Hoover did all he thought would help fix the troubling times. Congress tried to pass bills to help the suffering people, but hoover was stubborn and rejected these because he stated, “Prosperity cannot be restored by raids upon the public Treasury.” (History.com Staff). Hoovers idea was to create jobs and let america pull itself back together, instead of the government intervening so much that it would look like capitalism. Hoover claimed that the causes of the Great Depression were out of his control (Biology.com Editors). Franklin Roosevelt came in after Hoover and took over in the presidency.
