In the United Kingdom and the United States, bands were creating a new style of music. The styles of metal originated from blues rock and psychedelic rock and created a new sound with heavy distorted guitars, faster drum patterns, extended solos, and an overall louder sound. Some early examples of bands using this formula and that were credited with the title of “Heavy Metal” would be bands like Black Sabbath, who broke out into the newly formed metal scene with their single “Paranoid” in 1970, Led Zeppelin, who gained mainstream commercial success with their albums Led Zeppelin 1-4 in 1969-1971, and also Deep Purple, who with Zeppelin and Sabbath, formed “The Unholy Trinity of hard rock and heavy metal bands in the early to mid-1970’s”. Many bands over the next few years evolved the sound and then you get bands like Judas Priest, who in the late 1970’s, helped evolve the genre by being one of the first bands to disregard much of the blues influence. Many subgenres over the years were created, such as thrash metal, which bands like Metallica, Slayer, and Megadeth made popular for the fast tempo drumming, the lower register sounds from the guitar, and also the faster and more complex lead guitar work. In the early 1990’s, a new wave crashed into the U.S, with the emergence of nu-metal. Many people blamed him because of his music, claiming it promoted hate, anger, violence, and drug use. They also tried to compare the trench coats the shooters wore to Manson’s attire that he usually wore. He claims that being blamed nearly killed his career. (Loudwire) Also, within Michael Moore’s’ film “Bowling for Columbine”, Manson gives one of his first interviews since the incident happened, after a period of going in the dark and not speaking out in respect to the victims’ families. It was proven later that the two shooters were not fans of Manson. There have been many psychological tests that have results that have shown that there isn’t a true link to the effects of listening to metal and the after effects resulting in violent/depressed behavior and even the murder/suicide statistics in the United States or even Canada.
