Research has shown that increasing physical activity is capable of improving the mental and clinical conditions of elderly people (Teixera et al, p. 125). This program was developed on concept of keeping older adults engaged, active, and by increasing or maintaining their social networks. The decline in social status can be attributed to physical impairments, loss of family, and friends, retirement, or other factors that surface when life begins to “settle down”. The decision to take action to help in the prevention of depression in seniors, reducing the suicide rate, sparked development for the SHARP health promotion program. Our program will launch at the micro level while the opportunity for growth in the years to come are more than promising.…
The four core concepts of nursing metaparadigm interact and influence each other. Persons have a duty to maintain their health as well as to ensure a healthy environment. However, when environmental systems are breach; indicators on the wellness and illness continuum signal the gate keeper of the health continuum, the paradigm of nursing. Nursing actively provides twenty four hour surveillance through primary prevention regarding the client roles and responsibility to preserve their health. Once, health indicator signals a breach to the person or environment paradigm; nursing paradigm activates secondary prevention mode and the art and science of nursing past and present engage in an epic battle to through nursing action to restore homeostasis…
Innovation and the Evolution of Health Promotion Summary On Tuesday November 29h, I participated in webinar called Innovation and the Evolution of Health Promotion, which was hosted by Paul E. Terry, PhD and, as panelist, the director member engagement of Premera Blue Cross, Neal Sofian, the CEO of Lark, Julia Hu, and the CEO of Tuzag, Dave Bulger. From Neal Sofian, I was able hear a concept of how an innovation can be effective; according to Neal Sofian, an innovation with the right information leads to the right behavior, but in order to get the right information people’s fears, desires, meanings, choice (preference), and relationship (experience) should be taken into consideration. In addition, Neal Sofian pointed that there is not such…
Research, Roles, and Values in Nursing Nurses perform many roles as they provide care on any given day. Nurses are educators, leaders, managers, providers of care, and members of a profession. They use the latest research and evidence-based practice to provide care to their patients. Nursing theories are also incorporated into the daily routines of nursing. A theory is “a method of perceiving reality and mapping the complex processes of human action and interaction that affect nursing care” (Houser, 2012, p. 135).…
The model fits a patient education approach to resolving the problem with poor patient compliance. Using HPM, the nurse takes on the role of educator and performs the initial task of assessing the patient’s perception of health in order to develop individual plans of care. This allows the nurse to create a comprehensive plan tailored to the individual patient so that the patient is able to achieve optimal self-care and disease prevention. By performing a thorough assessment and constructing a highly individualized plan of care, the nurse is able to focus on the patient’s strengths and identify weaknesses that prevent the patient from achieving compliance, and to take responsibility for their role in their own health and wellness. Empowering the patients will motivate them to make the necessary changes in behavior as well as their environment in order to promote better health outcomes (Petiprin,…
We are their teachers, advocates, friends, and confidants. By acting as all of these, we are able to have an influence in our patient’s feelings towards medicine and the medical world. It is my belief that with this influence, we should be providing our patients with the tools they need to promote a healthy wellbeing for themselves. As nurses, we should be advocating for preventive measures to keep our patients healthy, such as yearly physicals, smoking cessation, and methods of reducing and dealing with life’s stressors in a positive manner. It is my belief that if we provide these outlets to our patients, we are giving them the keys to a much healthier lifestyle, in which they will likely reduce the amount of illness they may encounter.…
The conceptual framework selected to guide this study was a modification of the Health Promotion Model (HPM) (Pender, Murdaugh, & Parson, 2011) and Maternal Role Attainment (MRA) - Becoming A mother (BAM) theory (Mercer, 2004).The HPM focuses on three sets of factors: individual characteristics and experiences, behavior-specific cognitions and affect, and behavioral outcomes. According to the HPM person’s health behavior are affected by these set of factors as the person in dynamic and continuous interaction with his environment. These factors are unique to each person and have an effect on a person’s evaluation of his health.…
The three areas that Pender’s model focuses are individual characteristics and experiences, behavior-specific cognitions and affect, and behavioral outcomes ("Health Promotion Model - Nursing…
Meghan, In your model case you stated "If modifying one's behavior to improve health is not health promotion, then nothing is. " I agree with this statement, but I also feel our job as nurses, is to assess and monitor what one's own perceptions are on what it mean to be healthy. An individual perceives health based on her or his experiences of ill health.…
Diabetes is an epidemic condition that affects millions of people of all ages, genders, races, and ethnic groups around the globe. Diabetes management implies a team of care health professionals that approach this condition by teaching patients’ knowledge, skills, and providing support to the patients and family. As a professional nurse and future advanced practice nurse, providing care for patients with type 2 diabetes it is challenging. The healthcare provider’s role is to reinforce healthy behaviors and modify the unhealthy ones in order to prevent complications. In the role of delivering care to patients with this chronic disease educational program is influential in the patient’s gaining knowledge about disease, compliance with the treatment, glycemic control in reducing the risk for complications.…
The Patient Promise is a health promotion pledge created by two medical students at John Hopkins Medical School in 2012. It is created for all healthcare professionals to “lead by example” to advocate patient health (The Patient Promise, 2012). The pledge promotes patient health by holding a partnership with the patients and practicing the similar healthy lifestyle behaviors themselves, which can contribute to controlling the increasing obesity rate in the U.S.. Some of the interventions include implementing physical activity, balanced nutrition, refrain from use of harmful substances, and stress management. With the national increasing obesity rate, which includes nurses, a simple pledge of self health promotion can help bring self-awareness…
Health promotion empowers people to have control and knowledge to improve their health. Several nations collectively devised the Ottawa Charter for Health promotion with the goal of health improvement for all communities by the millennium (McMurray & Clendon, 2015). This essay explores the roles of a nurse for health promotion within the five categories of the Ottawa Charter for sufferers of Acute Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease. The five strategies include Build Healthy Public Policy, create supportive environments, strengthen community action, develop personal skills and reorient health services.…
Health promotion is a course of action to help people change their habits to attain excellent health (Fair, p.2). For physical therapists, it should come as second nature to promote and become advocates of health and wellness. In the US, the pervasiveness of obesity will rise from “32% in 2008 to 50% in 2030” (Kraschnewski, Hwang, George, Lehman, & Sciamanna, 2014). Taking this information into account, we as physical therapists, should be involved in creating a health promotion initiative that would target the workforce.…
