Childhood Obesity
Childhood obesity is a serious medical problem. “Obesity now affects 1 in 6 children and adolescents in the United States” (Childhood Overweight and Obesity, 2015). Obesity occurs in children who are well above normal weight for their age and height. Childhood obesity effects multiple aspects of a child’s life including their mental and physical health problems. The mental health problems are associated with poor self-esteem in children; which can also cause depression. Discussed earlier having healthy active schools are overall better for the students. The main reason teachers should advocate for healthy, active schools is because they should want their students to succeeded in the class room and in life. Healthy students make better grades and overall perform better than students who are not healthy. ‘In 2010 the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services conducted a meta-analysis of 50 studies related to the association between school-based physical activity and academic performance and found that 50.5 percent of the studies yielded positive gains, 48 percent yielded no gains, and 1.5 percent had a negative effect on academic performance” (Birch, 2015). Teachers should want to see their students do well in school. We all know that education is the key to having a bright future and when kids perform well they are more likely to want to continuing doing school; because they like being good at things. Teachers are also in a great place to advocate healthy, active schools. The students look up to us as their role models. With that being said we should notice that we are great advocates without even trying. Students will watch their teacher. They will watch what their teacher eats, drinks, does, wears, and says. With teachers knowing that students do this they can use it to their ability to effect the students opinions and actions on being
