There were 2 sides during the American Civil war (April 12, 1861- April 9, 1865). The Southern states also know as the Confederacy, allowed and had slavery. The Union occupied the Northern states. When she was 12, she became a field hand slave. Her job was to take care of the farms. Overseers were owners who were at the farms to make sure that the slaves did their work properly and did not take a break or slow down. She was able to physically do all the jobs that grown men did outside on the farm. When she was a teenager, she was hit in the head by an overseer. The hit caused her to fall asleep a few times a day, for the rest of her life. Imagine if you just fell asleep a few times a day? Some people might not mind some extra sleeping time, but overall it would make life a lot harder. Despite having this hard condition, she still made 19 dangerous trips to help people.
