Thomas Garrett was a very kind man who lived in Wilmington, Delaware and had contributed many things for the slaves on their journey. One example that illustrates the theme of freedom and sacrifice is how he had given the slaves shoes to wear. He shows freedom and sacrifice because if he had been caught helping the slaves he would have faced many repercussions due to this act therefore sacrificing his life. He shows freedom because of how he helped the slaves out of his will although he knew he could get in trouble. Also, he is a very big and strong man but he never harmed people.
