Chapter 1:
The story begins describing a very sad city, one that is so sad, that it doesn’t know its name and there are glumfish. There may have been a tragic event that has happened here. I wonder what that tragic event was, or it could also be just an emptiness in life. “they made people belch with melancholy even though the skies were blue.” There was a man who was able to ignore all of the sadness and cheer children up with his stories and his friends. “To his admirers he was Rashid the Ocean of Notions, as stuffed with cheery stories as the sea was full of glumfish; but to his jealous rivals he was the Shah of Blah.” His wife stopped singing one day and her husband didn’t notice because he was very busy telling stories. His son would ask him where the stories came from and his father would just reply that they came from the sea of stories however his son wanted real stories. He uses onomatopoeia when he makes the “glug, glug, glug” noise.
The people that live above them treat Haroun very nicely however the man does not like Haroun’s father and feels that all the stories are pointless. This leads to his selfish mother leaving the …show more content…
The weed transforms into a person and this displays more of the magic in this story. However the person tells Haroun that the sea of stories has begun to get polluted and that many of the popular children's stories have been altered, which seems to symbolize a huge upcoming trial for him. Butt gives him a lesson about the Chupwalas, how they behave. This shows how helpful of a supernatural helper he is. They are just about to enter when Butt gives Haroun a chocolate bar which Haroun gobbles down which implies he must be very hungry and magic is tiring. Haroun and Butt then enter and they see a man in a suit that is very familiar. He sees his father. This may be one of the trials it’s too early however for the reconciliation of the father
