Knowing where the child is being raised, is important when asking questions about why, what, or how. Background will teach a person about who the individual is. Experience is also something that the individual will explore and learn from all throughout life. The most important experiences, followed by lessons, come at the age of adolescence. “Thank You M’am” tells the reader that the boy, Roger, is fifteen years old and wants to fit in with the rest of the kids his age that live in his town. For example Roger steals tries to woman's’ purse to buy some blue suede sneakers that Elvis brought into the generation. All the boys in Rogers town would walk around wearing their blue suede shoes, and Roger wanted to fit in. In the short story “Charles”, the character Laurie comes from an average family with a mother and father, but Laurie was a big trouble maker so he made up the character, Charles, to cover all of his guilt when he would come home to his parents every day after school. Everything written about growing up could be categorized as experience or maturing, what is growing, and who and where does the person come from. Each category of growing up is different, even if it is told the same way. There are many famous writers who are remembered because of their childhood stories and lessons.
