Final Paper The characters in Othello all have characteristic that make them very unique. While they are unique, they all either display grit and/or show one of the two basic mindsets being the growth and fixed mindset. I define grit as the stick-to-it attitude that takes the average to the elite level. Angela Duckworth, the author of “Angela Duckworth and the Research on ‘Grit’, defines grit as “sticking with things over the long term until you master them”(Duckworth 15) and also goes on to say that a gritty individual’s advantage is their stamina. Desdemona’s motivation is her love for Othello which is shown when she makes the sacrifice of not letting her father know that Othello and her are getting eloped. Though there were rumors and accusations of her loyalty to Othello, Desdemona did not commit any form of adultery. After Othello’s motivation and goal changed, Desdemona’s goals changed. Still motivated by her love for Othello, Desdemona then makes her attempts to prove her innocence to Othello. Desdemona takes on this goal from the point when she found out how he felt about the rumor and stuck with it to the very end showing signs of her grit. Iago had lots of hate for Othello, in fact his main motivation was get revenge on Othello. Iago had many reasons but first he said that he deserved lieutenant over Othello and even more over than Cassio at the time due to his experience which was more than what Cassio had and also said “I hate the Moor and it is thought abroad, that ’twixt my sheets, ‘Has done my office. I know not if‘t be true, But I, for mere suspicion in that kind, Will do it for surety,”. This quote and the job of being lieutenant shows that Iago has many motives to why he doesn’t like Othello this one being that he thinks Othello is messing around with his wife. Iago goes on to create plan with Roderigo to ruin the life of Othello. Iago falls under the category of the growth mindset. This is shown since he got even more determined since knowing that he lost that lieutenant position the “lowly moor” which was Othello. Iago’s determination also speaks to the grit of his character. Although he’s motivated by the wrong reasons, Iago put in some incredible effort into the making and the carrying out of the plan which is something only people with strong motivation and true grit would
