Colin Kaepernick, the current backup-QB for the 49ers, made headlines by choosing not to stand during the playing of the national anthem of the United States. Kaepernick justified his actions by saying that he doesn’t support the nation’s recent acts of police brutality as well as the unequal treatment of minorities. This sparked a major controversy all across the country. The polarizing nature of the situation has seen many people choose a side in the debate of whether or not to support both Kaepernick’s message and his form of protest. After researching sources from each side as well as having discussions with family, friends, and classmates, I stand by Colin Kaepernick’s decision to take a stand by not standing.

At a recent practice, Kaepernick wore a pair of socks depicting cartoon pigs wearing police hats. His protest up to that point had been completely nonviolent, but this gesture could be seen as antagonistic. Wearing those socks is not doing his cause any good and will only lead to his adversaries in this issue discrediting his opinion even more. For his sake, hopefully this was simply a one-off occurrence. Kaepernick should not continue to needlessly stir up a hornet’s nest with juvenile taunts. All it takes is one slip-up for the media to feel justified when portraying Kaepernick as a villain; a narrative they seem to already be pushing pretty hard
