The moral taught or lesson learned in the myth “Arachne” by Olivia Coolidge was that being too prideful is dangerous because it could get you into trouble. For example “-she became angry instead of frightened and an evil thought came into her head”(Coolidge 75). This thought led her to agitate Athena, for that’s why Athena turned her into a spider. If it weren’t for Arachne’s pride she would not have resorted into doing such an evil thing.
In the myth “Daedalus and Icarus” by Geraldine McCaughrean the moral taught or lesson learned is listen when you are given advice because it could be fatal. For instance, “His own father could only watch as Icarus hurtled head first into the glittering sea”(McCaughrean 56). For example, “People rushed out screaming. Their clothing fire, and they burned like torches as they ran”(Evslin 67). This shows lying is bad by showing the aftermath of Phaethon’s lie. Phaethon went through all the trouble of proving someone wrong and innocent people had to suffer, when all he had to do was tell the truth from the start.
Greek Mythology has lessons that affect our everyday lives. Lessons such as being too prideful is dangerous, listen when you are given advice, and lying is bad. The morals we learn from these stories are important because they apply in the way we live our day to day lives. We learn things from everyday experience, the rules we make, and the stories we read.
