A concern raised by a group of environmentalists over a threat to the Great Barrier Reef is carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that emit from burning of coal. The federation government environment minister, Mr. Greg Hunt approved a 16.5 billion dollars project to Indian company so called Adany mining company. According to Queensland premier and Adani mining company, claimed that the investment of coal mine would create 10,000 jobs for local residents and inject 22 billion dollars for …show more content…
Newman, the head of Queensland state and Adany mining company planned to construct rail line to transport Adany’s coal and onshore disposal site for dredge spoil from Adani’s coal port that resides near the Great Barrier Reef. The construction will generate environmental impacts on the reef.
Environmental conservation groups such as Environmental Defenders Office (EDO), MacKay Conservation group and the Alliance to Save Hinchinbrook took various legal actions against the approval of environmental minister, Greg Hunt on coal mine extraction and a coal dumpsite. If the court’s decision in favour for environmental groups, Mr. Hunt is required to reconsider his approval on coalmine in Carmichael.
Nowadays, climate change is a hot topic in the world. Scientists prove that the major cause of climate change is human activities through burning of fossil fuel and deforestation. These activities increase greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, which global warming articulates every year. Climate change is one of the most significant drivers in change in social-ecological system in coastal areas(Evans et al., 2013). Johnson and Marshall (2007) and Wachenfeld et al (2007) (cited in Evans et al., 2013 p.84) stated that climate change is the great risk to the Great Barrier Reef that has larger impacts on ecology, economy and socio-culture of the Great Barrier Reef …show more content…
Climate change representative of the World Bank, Mr. Rachel Kyte said that continued use of coal fuel means exact a large cost on the poorest nations in the world, create social impacts like health issues and increase climate change that impose great pressure on the least developed countries. She added that respiratory rate would be increased if people had access to power that generated from coal-fired power plants. The social costs of coal-fired power are uncountable (the guardian). The World Bank restricts its fund to support coal fuel projects, but they have a strong commitment to provide power accessibility for the needed people through the alternative cleanest energy sources.
Another major impacts of climate change on the Great Barrier Reef and coastal areas are ecosystems and marine lives. Based on a report of department of climate change of Australian government in 2009 revealed that climate change’s effect provides significantly impacts on the marine ecosystem. Theses ecological system has been damaging by current factors such as urban development and building construction. The effects of climate change would add an additional pressure to the existing problems, which make the case becoming worse and
