This painting is the third in a series of four panels depicting the life and miracles of Saint Zenobius, the fourth-century bishop of Florence and one of the city’s patron saints. Each panel shows different a number of levels of episodes from the saint’s life. As for the first panel shows the saint of youth, the second panel contains three stories about relating to miracles performed by the saint: he exorcism two children by a demon, he put forward a Christian mother, the son of life, and a blind man he regain his sight. As shown in the panel is the death of a young man and then increase the saint of life and death. Look at the third series of the painting; at the left hand side of, there is a man who is kneeling, name Saint Zenobius.…
The artwork I have chosen is titled, “American Gothic”, by Grant Wood, painted in 1930. Grant Wood painted on a 74.3 X 62.2 cm piece of oil on beaverboard. These materials give the painting an old timing look but with good color and contrast. This painting can be viewed at the Art Institute of Chicago. Now I’m going to describe this painting in more detail, so that you can see a visual picture in your head.…
As my great work of art that inspired many other parodies I choose American Gothic by Grant Wood. The painting is one of the most recognizable and even people who do not know of the original will probably recognize one of the many versions of this painting. I think this is a great work of art for the simple fact that so much is going on in such a simple picture. The expressions on the faces and the posture they have. What are they thinking, why are they not both staring at the artist painting them.…
This is a piece called The Dead Soldier, by Joseph Wright. Joseph Wright was an English portrait and landscape painter. He is thought of as the first professional painter to express the spirit of the Industrial Revolution. He is also well known for his emphasis on contrast in his paintings, called the Chiaroscuro effect. He often painted figures in dark lighting illuminated by candlelight.…

In “Making a Spectacle: Welty, Faulkner and Southern gothic,” Susan Donaldson explores Southern Gothic literature. In this article, Donaldson discusses the grotesque themes found in Southern Gothic literature. She incorporates different descriptions of Southern Gothic from various authors to give an accurate definition of Southern Gothic literature. Donaldson also explores the relationship between Southern Gothic and the portrayal of female characters. In the Old South, women were usually pitied, submissive, and considered “pure.”…
“The Love Letter” is a painting by Jan Vermeer, made in 1669 during the Dutch Golden Age/Baroque period. It is an interior scene, typical of both Vermeer and Dutch art during and after the Counter-Reformation. Due to both the success of the Dutch Republic and the rebellion against the Catholic Church, Dutch art was generally more materialistic, everyday-life centered, and focused on wealth, as the Dutch enjoyed massive success as bankers and as seafarers. Many of these elements are incorporated into this painting, giving the viewer an intimate look into this woman’s life, including symbols to hint at the situation, and using details to enhance the meaning.…
The painting on sandstone depicts the father and son, Antef, sitting on a bed embracing each other. Behind the son is the wife seated on the same bed with her hands on her son. Next to the bed is a table covered with food offerings.…
There are a couple men in the painting but we don’t know if the well-dressed man is a family member or a servant. Since he has his hand on the back of one of the children I have to believe it’s most likely her father. But he stands in shaded background without any recognition as a leader in the household. The other man is not dressed well and stands informally off to the side as if he’s waiting for his turn to make his confession. He looks like he may be a ranch-hand or a tradesman.…
What is “Gothic”? Nowadays, people assume that stories with supernatural content are considered to be “Gothic”. However, the supernatural is only one of the elements to a Gothic literature. With that, Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Black Cat” and Henry Lawson’s “The Bush Undertaker” will be explored in terms of introducing more aspects of the Gothic and their similarities in regards to how the Gothic is used to convey their messages across.…
The Third of May 1808 was painted in 1814 by Francisco Goya commissioned by Ferdinand VII, who had taken the throne after the French had been driven out of Spain. This work’s dimensions are 8' 9" x 12' 4" painted with oil on canvas. Guernica was painted later in 1937 by Pablo Picasso as a piece for the Spanish Pavilion at the World’s Fair. This painting was created with oil on canvas with dimensions reaching 11’6” x 25’8”. While Goya and Picasso took radically different approaches to depicting the emotional affects of war they each experienced, Picasso’s Guernica drew influences from Goya’s Third of May 1808.…
This painting was most likely in response to World War 1, seeing that it was created two years after the war had ended. The men’s coats make it apparent that they were solders. From the charred faces to the metal jaws to the contorted limbs, this painting is a dramatic example of the aftermath of war. By looking at the painting from this perspective, I find it less hideous and more saddening. Even though I do not enjoy viewing “The Skat Players,” I cannot deny its’ truthful…
The painting I chose was Frank Stella’s “Flin Flon VIII”. It is an acrylic piece on canvas characterized by a mixture of curving and straight lines that interlock, vibrant colors, and an emphasis on the circle in the middle of the canvas. A huge quantity of negative space is present in the painting and the painting emits a smooth texture. The painting is one hundred and eight inches squared, making it one of the largest paintings in the San Diego Art Museum. Its size projects itself on the viewer overwhelming them with its color and size.…
INTRODUCTION Oscar Wilde once said, “Every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter.” A portrait is defined as either a painting, picture, sculpture, or any form of artistic representation of a person, where the person’s facial expression is the main focus of the artwork. The goal of a portrait is so showcase the mood, attitude, or even characteristic of the person. In most cases, a portrait illustrates a person looking directly at the painter with just their head and shoulders being drawn, which often creates a dramatic tone or sense of being watched by the viewer.…
This art piece was created in 1845, oil on canvas, and is a portrait of Courbet pulling on his hair, with his eyes opened wide, starring at the viewer which symbolizes some kind of deep emotion that he is feeling inside. Courbet uses different shades of shadows, lights and strokes. He was then later famous for “The Stone Breakers” that was actually a painting he did using the realistic style. The picture was created in 1849, oil on canvas of two men working showing labor. Courbet used strong brushstrokes, lines, and color to make the painting more…
