Most people believe that it was formed by the Colorado river millions of years ago. Most canyons are formed by a river eroding away at land for millions of years. But scientists still can’t agree how it was formed. A lot of geological evidence shows that the Colorado broke out west out of the Grand Canyon about 5 million years ago, or even longer. But with this pressure, there is a debate about what the canyon looked like millions of years ago. A lot of archaeologists ask, “did the river carve the canyon all at once? Or was there a gorge waiting for the river to flow into it? One study showed rocks that were found at the western end of the canyon that were at least 70 million years old. There was also a rock found at the bottom that was at least 230 million years old. For many years it was inhabited by the Hualapai tribe The canyon became a national park in 1919. It has an ancient past that can help archaeologists find out a lot about what it was like back then, and it shows us one of the best examples of erosion in the world. It also brings in over 5 million tourists a year, not including the wildlife. But the Grand Canyons future doesn’t look so bright. One thing that can happen in the future is it could get polluted, but that’s unlikely because of it’s current very good air quality. But another problem that could happen is that it’s home for animals could vanish due to having so many tourists each year. Something else could happen is that there could be a huge wild fire that could spread all across the grand canyon. But despite the risks that could happen in the future the Grand Canyon is a beautiful place and home to many animals, and it’s our job to keep it that
