Conducting a therapy session is not only about investigating the patient’s issues and being able to guide them. It is also about building a special bond with the patient, so that the he or she feels comfortable enough to voice out their worries. Having a good relationship can make all the difference between a positive and negative counseling experience. Building a relationship, is the first stage in counseling, is a continuous process (Glagging 2009). Any relationship begins by starting a bond in which both are confortable enough to show their true self. Creating a new relationship with someone new comes quite natural in my case; I have always been a very compassionate person. People who desire counseling as a profession are usually empathetic by nature. It’s commonly believed that empathy is the key feeling one must have to make a good counselor. The patient will bring different types of emotions during the counseling process, and it is the counselor’s responsibility to be supportive and understanding to help their clients feel comprehended and respected. After listening to your patient share their story and good notes have been made through the process, the next step is to establish specific goals to accomplish based on the needs of your patient. One of the main goals any counselor should have is helping your patient feel hopeful their issues can come to resolution. Having a positive attitude during therapy sessions is a way that allows your patients to start opening up about their issues. If the patient feels you are judging him or her in a negative manner over what they have shared and revealed, the opposite result will happen and no progress or success will be made. The therapeutic relationship is often the most powerful tool available to counselors. Patients desperately need a safe and trustworthy relationship with a counselor who understands their experience (Roaten, G. K. 2011) The bond between a counselor and a patient is a special one. Patients decide on the counseling process for the reason that it offers patients a setting to feel free from anyone being able to judge their issues. With any professional relationship boundaries are important. All interactions should be limited to a therapeutic setting, and all public contact between a counselor and client should be
