CNS tumors can be classified into two categories such as either primary versus metastatic or Benign versus Malignant. Tumors formed in epithelial tissues of brain are termed as neuroepithelial tissue tumor. There are also tumor of meninges, germ cell tumors, tumors of sellar region, lymphomas and hematopoietic tumor. Tumors at cranial and peripheral nerves could be observed. A standard classification for tumors is provided by World health Organization (WHO). A Glioma is a type of tumor that usually starts in the brain or spine. Origin of the tumor is from glial cells, hence it is termed as glioma. A glioma can be a high grade or a low grade. Around 80% of all the primary intrinsic malignant tumors are high grade gliomas. There are three main types of gliomas, Astrocytomas, Oligodendrogliomas and mixed. A high grade glioma is caused due to the raised intracranial pressure. It can lead to seizures. Epilepsy is common with patients with CNS tumors. The grade relies on the size, pattern of venous drainage, and neurologic eloquence of adjacent brain. Grade I malformations are small, superficial, and located in noneloquent cortex; Grade V lesions are large, deep, and situated in neurologically critical areas; and Grade VI lesions are essentially …show more content…
Techniques like MR spectroscopy, Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), Perfusion Weighted Imaging (PWI), Susceptibility Weighted Imaging (SWI), Functional MRI, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) are utilized as per the requirement. For instance, a third grade Oligodendroma can be visualized accurately by the SWI. A presurgical investigation includes EEG, MEG, fMRI, SPECT. Further, a surgical resection is performed. It is advised that an aggressive surgery is succeeded by a Radiotherapy or a Chemotherapy. The reason being, alone surgery is inefficient, it can lead to butterfly lesions. A low grade glioma is usually found in younger patients and also has three types Astrocytomas, Oligodendrogliomas and mixed. Meningiomas is found more in women as compared to men. They are mostly benign and are attached to the dura. Meningiomas, usually occur along the sagittal sinus, over the cerebral convexities, in the cerebellar-pontine angle and along the dorsum of the spinal cord. Some of the miscellaneous tumors are choroid plexus papilloma, colloid cysts, Medulloblastoma, Vestibular Schwannoma, Germ cell tumor, Spinal Ependymoma. Metastatic tumor is spread of a cancer from primary site to other body parts. For instance, if a cancer breaks away from a tumor, then it can infiltrate other body parts, through the lymph system or
