Genetically modified foods (GMOs) are much cheaper to produce, can be grown with many less resources, and can produce a higher yield more efficiently. One of the reasons GMOs are a benefit to the world is helping design disease resistant foods in developing countries. (1) For example, in Uganda, 80% of plant crops are infected with various diseases and pests. More specifically, a disease known as Wilt, Wilt effects bananas throughout Uganda. Bananas are the main source of food for the Ugandan people, a genetically modified version of these fruits were made to prevent them from dying. The implementation of the modified gene in the plant triggers a process that eliminates any infected cells allowing for a successful harvest. The creation of this GM banana helped save over 50% of the crops that otherwise would have died to the disease. This shows how GMOs can help solve possible hunger issues in developing countries by preventing any disease that may reduce the crop yield. (2) Furthermore, salmon is one of many foods that has been modified to grow twice as fast, resulting in a roughly half the original price. (1) Food scientists are researching the effect of the introduction of GMOs in developing countries such as Uganda. They are raising concerns that it may lead to corporate exploitation from some companies like Monsanto, the world 's leading source of genetically engineered seeds. In fear that the company may exploit this newly produced genome by attaching expensive price tags to it. Along with risks from Monsanto, GMOs also provide risks if they end up being harmful to humans. (4) GMOs seeds will continuously cross pollinate as their seeds travel. As a result, it will be very challenging to clean up the contaminated gene pool. These effects of GMO pollution will outlast the duration of climate change thus leaving a lasting impact on the biodiversity of many ecosystems. Economic loss with organic and non-GMO farmers that have a hard time keeping their crops uncontaminated, will be at a loss due to the GMO pollution as well. If GMOs end up being harmful to humans, future generations will also be a risk because it is too early to know the implications and effects on evolutions. (2) GM salmon may seem entirely safe, and it is mostly is according the FDA, however more testing is suggesting that that there is potential harm to organs like the liver, kidney and heart, as well as a higher risk of cancers and early death for those who consume these animals.
