Sometimes, mass media will use stereotypes to strictly display the perception of the roles each gender has in society. In the Allstate commercial, the stereotype stating that men are better drivers than women is clearly displayed, however, Allstate presented a commercial with a beneficial message defeating the stereotype given. Social stratification is widely known as the system by which societies put their people into rankings based off of different criteria. In specific, gender stratification refers to the social ranking of men gaining the power and privilege to gain higher statuses over women (Geist and Myers 2016). The Allstate commercial did a fair job using mass media to display the gender inequality and the stereotype stating that men are better drivers than women. Mass media, in particular, has an enormous effect on individual’s attitudes, moods, and behaviors which is why it has a close effect on socialization. Not only does the mass media have the power to determine how we learn about the information that is going on the world but it also has the power to control individual’s thoughts and ideas. Mass media can send off advertisements that shape the way individuals see themselves but it also sends out messages that shape the way each individual perceives society to be. At the end of the day, mass media does play a key role in the process of gender socialization because it shows individuals all of the ideas, images and stereotypes of what women and men are supposed to be
