In a school sport participation article it states, “Adolescent girls’ reluctance to participate in co-educational sports may be the result of pressure from social norms, fear of injury, or threat of embarrassment” (Edwards, et al, 2012). This shows that young girls are being forced into social norms of participating in physical activities and they feel as though they might be embarrassed and get injured. Social norms for women playing sports suggests that women shouldn’t play sports and focus on other things that are more ‘gender’ related. For males sports gives them a chance to show their masculinity and show their will power. Many women’s fear of injury also comes from them feeling insecure about playing the sport incorrectly and being seen as a joke and not taken serious like many famous female athletes have experienced. The women’s soccer team is getting paid significantly lower than the male soccer team and they are bringing all of the money. Which is completely unfair for the women soccer team because they worked extremely hard to get those wins and a lot of fans watch their games more than the men’s soccer team. Also being embarrassed is another thing because it is bad enough that women are already looked down upon in sports but to feel embarrassed to play a sport because they may not be good enough. Great legends like Billie Jean King helped with Title IX, but it seems that society is going back in time because women still aren’t taken serious in
