From the moment the newborn enters the world they are either wrapped in a pink blanket if they are a girl or blue blanket if they are a boy. Young girls are guided to choose jobs that are more fostering such as Nursing, Teaching, Social Work, and many more. Women who choose to go outside of what they are taught may be viewed in a negative way by many. According to Bashevkin (2009), the characteristics of an effective leader being assertive and decisive, associate with the male gender in today 's society. To say that only men encompass these qualities is an unfair judgment to females of society. Canada is considered to be a just society and that is not necessarily the case. Even though women make up 52% of the world 's population there is still a significant difference in the representation of females compared to males in government, which is considered a democratic deficit (Driedger, 2013). Statistics have been included in this paper in order to provide evidence that women are indeed not as involved as men in politics. All in all, the way children are taught to act based on their biological sex, the role of a woman in society, and the experiences women are able to have are all part of why women are less involved in politics. Hopefully one day in the near future the world becomes a place where equality actually exists, men and women will have a fair chance at fighting for the same position without any social stigma or being told what they are capable of or
