Institute of Medicine’s 2010 and 2016 Future of Nursing reports will influence the role of APN. Future of nursing report explains how nurse’s role, education and responsibilities should change to meet the increased health care needs of the country. Several barriers prevent nurses from responding to increased health care needs successfully. The Future of Nursing report says that these barriers need to overcome to ensure that nurses are well positioned to lead change and advance health.

Because of increased need for affordable care APRNs will be playing major role in health care system in delivering care and in decision making. Nurses will be full partners with physicians and other health care professionals, in redesigning health care in the United States. APNs can provide high quality, patient centered, accessible and affordable care. Removing barriers to practice and care, achieving higher level of education, collaboration and leadership and promoting diversity are other roles of an APN.
