In Funny in Farsi, Dumas wanted to entertain the reader by sharing her stories about moving to America. In the story, Dumas uses humor, sarcasm, and figurative language, such as, similes and hyperbole. “We would say ‘You’ve heard of India, Japan, or China? We’re on the same continent,’” (149). He wrote the story to inform the reader about life lessons that should never be forgotten. Asgedom used capital letters, personal reflection and metaphor. “I TAUGHT HIM TO WORK HARD AND TO RESPECT OTHERS. NOW LOOK WHERE THAT HAS TAKEN HIM,” (160). The quotes tells us that the author use capital letter because he tried to show the volume his dad’s voice had. Especially, Asgedom used personal reflection. “...we carried a home, a community, a sense of mutual responsibility wherever we went,” (163). Asgedom used personal reflection to try to make his reader visually his ceremony. Keep in mind, he used metaphor. “Today’s small act of kindness can become tomorrow's whirlwind of human progress,” (165). This shows that Asgedom used metaphor to how his reader can have a purpose in the world. Even though he worked hard to get where he is, he never forgot where he came
