Sir Francis Drake
Francis drake did many memorable things that help us understand the world. Francis Drake was born between 1540 and 1544. He was born in Devonshire, England and was the oldest of 11 other brothers. His mother was named Mary Drake and his father was Edmund Drake. Sir Francis Drake had gotten a little education, but he later learned the basics of navigation. He was later apprenticed to a merchant who sailed the coastal waters to trade with other merchants. This was the start of a new youth waiting to explore the world. In the 1560’s he worked as an explorer and captain of his very own ship named the Judith. In fact, at one point in his life, he was also an illegal slave trader, working with his cousin, John Hawkins. Drake was also one of the famous seamen during the Elizabethan era. In Portobelo, Panama, Sir Francis Drake died of a fever on January 28, 1596. He was put in a lead coffin which was buried at sea in Portobelo. Divers are actually still looking for the coffin.

He was the first explorer to fully circumnavigate the globe. He has a bay and passage named after him because he had discovered them. He did start the Spanish war, but that was only because he had avenged his dead shipmates who were killed while Spanish were raiding their ship. In truth, without him, we would have never known that Tierra del Fuego was actually a chain of islands instead of being part of a southern continent. Sir Francis Drake was truly an exploration hero.
