Like Harriet, most tortoises have extremely heavy, high, and dome shaped shells (some that contain bumps). But, some are smaller and have a “saddleback” shell. Adult tortoises usually have a brown shell and the young tortoises usually have dark tan shells. They also have claws to be able to dig, short and sturdy feet, and their front limbs are protected with thick scales. Tortoises can also completely retract their heads when they feel like they are in danger. Most tortoises eat safe grasses and weeds, leafy greens, and some hard vegetables and moist fruits.
