In the movie Finding Nemo Marlin follows the cycle of the hero's journey because he gets called out to adventure, has a mentor that uses her humor to overcome her weakness and faces many tests on his long journey. The author possibly send Marlin on a adventure to show that if a person really cares about something they should do anything to achieve even if is the biggest fear that you have. An example of that is Marlin takes the leap of faith he overcomes what was his guardian. His guardian was anxiety which is internal. His anxiety always confined him to what he knew was safe. For example, when Marlin saw the mask fall down from the boat and down to the bottom of the ocean he was scared and did not want to face his fear of darkness. He was afraid of going down because it was dark and cold. In that situation, Dory acts as a mentor and tells him to be always positive in tough times and face your fears. Another quote used in the movie Finding Nemo was “So, we’re cheating death now. That’s what we’re doing, and we’re having fun at the same time” (Finding Nemo. 2003). The word “death” symbolizes trial, illness, challenge, a testing of faith, serious injury or actual death, or even spiritual rebirth. During the jellyfish race Marlin and Dory were testing their faith to see how lucky it was going to be for them that day. Dory almost died in this section of the movie because Marlin did not trust Dory when she said that they should really swim through the trench and not over it. Through Dory’s example and the support of other sea creatures, Marlin goes through his encounters, endures his traumatic voyage through the sea, overcomes his fears and learns to trust others and to believe in himself.
