This Movie Analysis focuses on three topics of discussion, based on the premise that racism sits deeply within Mississippi and its people. Firstly, the Media influences people’s perceptions. Secondly, the Media is not necessarily the main influencer. Thirdly, the Media may not be the one who initiates a problem/issue.
Firstly, people’s perception and thoughts are susceptible to influence by the media, and can be coloured. Framing – “A way of giving some overall interpretations to isolated items of fact” (McQuail 379). This can be seen during the trials where the two attorneys represented the Media, and framed the information that was discussed in the courtroom, and what the Jurors (Receivers) should focus on. Just like how “information supplied to news media by sources (usually arrive) with a built-in frame that suits the purpose of the source” (McQuail 379).
