America: the land of the free and the home of inequality. As much as one may want to think of our country as one that does not have racial and social inequalities, he or she could not be more wrong.. These divisions begin in childhood and we as a society continue to perpetuate through adult years. To discuss in further detail these unequal opportunities and distribution of wealth between social classes, one must question why are they unequal and how was this inequality produced? Annete Lareau studied a wide range of families from different social classes over a period of time in order to gain first- hand insight on these questions.

1). This type of parenting is reflected in the child’s confidence in their abilities and conversational skills with adults, preparing them for a successful adulthood. Furthermore, this “concentrated cultivation” causes children to gain an “emerging sense of entitlement” (Lareau, Question and Answers, p. 2). These children grow up believing they should pursue their own personal goals, which, with the support and help of their parents, more often than not results in success. This is not to say race has no significance; there is still racial segregation and discrimination in the workplace, which keeps competition for the best jobs at a minimum giving white a significant advantage over those in a racial minority (Skolnick & Skolnick , 2011, p. 387). However, race is a social construct (Beggs-Weber). Rather than just thinking of race as ethnic heritage and culture, one must realize that it is a “shared experience of being identified by others as a member of a certain group” (Beggs-Weber). And while there may be certain advantages or disadvantages based on race, one’s socio-economic class has a greater sway as to the direction of their lives, as it directly affects education and job opportunities, creating certain advantages for some and disadvantages for
