Despite all those changes, my mother’s side of the family is quite a close-knit bunch. We were all an extended family, a house full of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins and siblings. It can get quite frustrating at times because it feels as though there was always someone on top of you but it’s rewarding because you grow love the noise and the crazy fights but you also grow to love those family nights where we all laugh and build memories. For instance, the nuclear family household is more popular in the Eastern European countries such as Poland, Hungary and Romania whereas, the extended family household is more popular in Central and South America countries such as Peru, Colombia and Nicaragua. Being from the Caribbean, I can say without a doubt that the vast majority of households are extended family households. The most popular extended household consists of grandparents, an aunt/uncle, parents and children. In the Caribbean, the lifestyle in itself is quite different, family over everything. If you are celebrating and birthday, graduation or promotion, everyone celebrates; from your grandparents to grandchildren celebrate together with you. The word family is never taken lightly. It means to love someone unconditionally; flaws and all, to be a secure and constant support and the person who will always fight for you and with you and the person who always wants to see you smiling.
