According to Greek mythology, Orion was a hunter of incredible size and skill. It was said that he became boastful of his abilities to kill any and all beasts on earth while talking to the Goddess Artemis (though in other versions he is said to have overindulged in wine and forced himself on her, which lead to his demise), and while boasting was overheard by the Goddess Gaia, who was mother to all creatures. Gaia became enraged at Orion and his bloodlust for her charges, and decided to send a small scorpion. With Orion's size, strength and weapons useless, the scorpion was able to sneak up and sting him to death. When Orion dies Zeus puts both he and the scorpion on opposite sides of the sky so that they will never have to meet again. However, after I had read all of the stories there were to read about them, I liked to make up my own stories about these people and creatures and objects, so famed that their tales were written in the stars. So, here's a version of Orion's story some 15 years in the telling! I hope you enjoy.
--Orion was a strong and fearless hunter, known throughout the lands for his skill and prowess. He had hunted down beasts that were ravaging kingdoms, and brought prized feasts in front of kings. It was for one of these acts of gallantry that a king chose to thank Orion by putting on a grand hunt in his honour. The winner would be the hunter that could bring in the best deer in the forest for the King's banquet that night.
As Orion readied himself for the hunt, he boasted to his wife and those nearby of his extensive experience and success in such feats. However the Earth Goddess Gaia had overheard his gloating remarks and found his pride at killing her creatures contemptible, and vowed to teach him a lesson. Once Orion had set off into the forest with the other hunters, Gaia began. She snuck up behind Orion's wife and turned her into a strong, elegant doe.
