Leadership – I have been modelling the behaviour I want to see i
Practice – I have been making a big effort to use more of the Reo in my everyday practice. This includes using singular words, simple sentences, singing the children songs, counting, and reading cultural books. I have also been making sure that I am keep children’s mana intact. This means making sure all interactions are respectful, making sure the children know I am listening to them both verbally and non-verbally, giving them opportunities to take on leadership roles, having a voice in the program, encouraging tuakana tani relationships for example getting an older child to sit with a younger at the kai tepu or getting a more compentant child to show and role-model how to do something. It was such a lovely experience for all our children and staff and I hope brought us all closer together as the Jump Start whanau.
A group of children were also recently taken to the Hamilton museum for a trip to make poi. They spent a great deal of the time at the museum taking in the culture and then making some authentic poi with the lovely ladies at the museum. This was a very special outing for these girls as they really enjoy kapahaka and especially using the poi.
Our learning stories all contain a parent’s voice where parents are invited and encouraged to share their thoughts and aspirations for their children. Informal chats with parents about their children learning are also recorded in children’s learning stories
