This research paper explores what exactly Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is. This topic was chosen because of the lack of knowledge and misconception on OCD to the public eye. Many people think this is a disorder of excessive cleaning, but that is incorrect. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a complex disorder with three main parts to understand it: symptoms of OCD, treatments of OCD, and what causes OCD. These findings that we will discuss are significant because of what was previously stated, there is a lack of knowledge and misconception on OCD.

This condition makes the patient’s brain feel overwhelmed or out of “control” of a simple worry, causing them to have irrational behaviors to calm this worry down. OCD obsessions usually occur around themes such as doing well in school, excelling at athletics, job-related matters, self-appearance, keeping things clean, making someone happy, and the list goes on. Because of these obsessions, many decide to perform different compulsions such as tasks, behaviors, rituals, and/or repetitive syndromes. Some of these compulsions may coincide with an obsession as pediatrician Elana Pearl Ben-Joseph explains. Ben-Joseph stated that many times compulsions are related to the obsessions, for example, if a person is scared about germs or being sick they may wash their hands excessively (What Is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder? par. 6). She also explained that sometimes obsessions and compulsions may not even relate at all, such as a person rearranging things on their desk so a loved one doesn’t pass away or get sick (What Is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder? par. 7). The obsessions that lead to these compulsions are very unique and complex within themselves, along with the causes which are very diverse with an array of possibilities of triggers. With further research and advancements, OCD may have a hopeful future with better and more effective treatments. Many people misunderstand this disorder and the hardships that come with it by thinking it is a disease of excessive cleaning or over tidiness, but this misconception gap can be closed if people were more educated on OCD. Also if people were more educated on OCD, the handful of people that express symptoms may properly personally diagnose themselves and get treated.
