“I pledge allegiance…” the familiar sound I hear muttered through the mouths of my fellow classmates every morning at the beginning of class. With hands over their hearts and eyes full of admiration and sleep, stare at the flag in the corner of the classroom. As I look at the flag like the rest of my classmates with a different thought roaming around in my head with the exception of mumbling along with a monotone voice, thinking about what the words imply. I start to think about what my responsibilities as an American citizen are; my responsibility to America includes respecting and obeying federal, state and local laws, participating in my local community, and respecting the rights, beliefs, and opinions of others.
Respecting and following federal, state and local laws is a responsibility of every American. To follow the guidelines set for what is acceptable in each community. Citizen participation can be defined as a process which provides private individuals an opportunity to influence public decisions. Although I understand participating in my community is furthermore a recognition of better enjoying my surroundings and improving my schools, homes, and governments. Being a participant in my community can be as simple as volunteering locally, supporting local businesses, and going to community events such as city council meetings. Participating in my community gives me the opportunity as well as others to make my community what I want it to be. As an American, it is of my authority to participate in our communities to help set its course so that my children and generations after will live in a place that is more than an adequate and admirable
