Jem’s father Atticus is the only lawyer in Maycomb that is not racist. As soon as Atticus decided to take the case Scout and Jem were introduced to different and very cruel side of Maycomb that they have never experienced before. When the trail comes around Atticus is able to provided terrific evidence and reasonable doubt that Tom couldn’t have beaten Mayella due to the fact that he has no use of his left hand. This leads Jem to believe that the jury will see that Tom is innocent and that they will release him of all charges. Jem went up to his father and declared, “We’ve won, haven’t we” (206). But this is not the case justice was not served in that court trail, the jury let prejudice cloud there judgment and decision causing a completely innocent man to be thrown in jail.
