Maus II used friendship to deal with conflict. Anja brought her friends food even though she was deathly skinny and needed the energy. In return Anja’s friends didn’t give her up when a Kapo asked. Again one of her friends came to the rescue by hiding Anja when the same Kapo was chasing her. The Kapo could have killed Anja’s friend because she would not give up her hiding spot. This shows she cared more about their friendship then death. Anja and her friends weren’t the only ones who showed true friendship though, Vladek did too. They found a friend through the letters they wrote. The librarian served as a friend who listened to their rough days in the camps. “Write to me I will send you books and other things you might need.” This shows that the librarian not only cared about what they were writing, but also about them as a person and not a “prisoner”
The Boy in the striped pajamas also uses friendship. It take the phrase “friends for life” to a whole new level. Bruno brought Shmuel a sandwich when he noticed how skinny his fingers were. He also brought him a game. Without Bruno there to help him, Shmuel might have died in the concentration camp.
People may argue that Bruno did betray Shmuel. While this is true he later apologized. Friends forgive, so this is what Shmuel did. Fear got the better of Bruno and he had to make a tough decision in a short amount of time. To make it up to him he helped him look for his father. Bruno also showed more acts of kindness than betrayal and
